Must Be Ink began in 2015 in Tokyo, Japan, inspired by the founder’s experience completing the final session of a seven-part back piece. What began as an appreciation for the finished artwork became a deeper respect for tattooing as an art form, a skilled craft, and a culture with centuries of history behind it. That experience sparked an idea: create a place where people who appreciate tattooing could come together, discover exceptional work, learn about the culture, and celebrate the people who continue to shape it.
Must Be Ink is an independent digital magazine and community for tattoo enthusiasts, cultural adherents, artists, apprentices, studios, collectors, writers, and others who respect the art and traditions behind the ink. Tattooing carries different meanings across communities and cultures. It can represent identity, heritage, spirituality, remembrance, rebellion, artistry, or simply the desire to carry something meaningful on the skin. At the same time, tattooing has been stigmatized or restricted in many societies. Must Be Ink embraces those complexities and provides space to explore the art, history, traditions, people, and conversations that make tattoo culture what it is.
More than a directory or collection of photographs, Must Be Ink is being built as an editorial destination. The magazine will feature thoughtful articles and commentary, tattoo history and cultural features, festival and convention coverage, interviews, artist profiles, studio features, and independent reviews conducted using consistent standards and trusted contributors. Regular features will showcase exceptional artists and recognize tattoo shops whose artistry, professionalism, service, environment, and contributions to the community deserve attention.
Must Be Ink is also about connecting generations of the craft. Established artists and studios should have a place to showcase their work and tell their stories, while aspiring artists and apprentices need opportunities to learn, connect, and find their way into the profession. The platform aims to help create those connections between apprentices, working artists, mentors, and shops while respecting the skill, discipline, mentorship, safety, and dedication required to become a tattoo professional.
Above everything else, Must Be Ink is about community. It belongs to the people who create the art, wear it, study it, preserve its traditions, challenge its boundaries, operate the shops, document its history, and simply love tattoos. Advertising, sponsorships, partnerships, and other commercial opportunities may help support the publication as it grows, but they exist to sustain the platform, not define it. Editorial credibility, honest representation, artistic expression, and respect for the tattoo community come first.
Must Be Ink is where the art, the culture, and the people behind the ink come together.
